NordVPN review 2026 (plus Black Friday deal guide)
By Top Shelf Picks · Updated October 29, 2026 · Prices checked on NordVPN's official US pricing page on the date above
Short answer: NordVPN is one of the safest default picks for most people in 2026. It has fast WireGuard-based connections (NordLynx), post-quantum encryption on that protocol, a no-logs policy that has been independently assessed six times, coverage for up to 10 devices, and a real 30-day money-back guarantee. The catches: the low headline price only applies to the first term and is billed upfront, renewals cost noticeably more, and the higher tiers sell a lot of extras you may not need. If you're going to buy a VPN, Black Friday is a sensible time to do it. Just do the renewal math first.
Check today's price: every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can test speeds and streaming on your own devices before you commit.
See NordVPN's current dealWho NordVPN is for
- Everyday privacy on public Wi-Fi, like cafés, airports, hotels and campus networks
- Travelers who want to reach their usual services and accounts from abroad
- Households with lots of devices: one account covers up to 10 devices at the same time
- People who want extra security tools (scam/phishing blocking, dark web alerts, a password manager) bundled into one subscription
- Tinkerers and gamers who'll actually use Meshnet to link their own devices privately
It's less ideal if you only need a VPN for a single week (monthly billing is expensive), or if you want the cheapest possible option with no upsells.
Speed and security features
NordLynx and post-quantum encryption
NordLynx is NordVPN's own protocol built on WireGuard. It's light, low-latency and easy on battery life, and it's what we'd use day to day. NordVPN has added post-quantum encryption to NordLynx on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV and Apple TV. One caveat from NordVPN's own support docs: post-quantum mode currently works only with NordLynx, so it's off when you use OpenVPN, a dedicated IP, obfuscated servers or Meshnet. NordVPN markets itself as "the fastest VPN" based on third-party tests it cites. Real-world speed depends on your connection and server choice, so test it yourself within the refund window.
Threat Protection, now "next-gen antivirus"
NordVPN's Threat Protection has grown into what it now calls a next-gen antivirus (shown in the app as "Scam, phishing, and malware protection"). On the pricing page at the time of writing, scam and phishing protection (DNS-level blocking of malicious domains while connected) is included on every plan. The fuller set, which adds anti-malware download scanning, an ad and tracker blocker, email link scanning, and call and message protection, is listed for Complete and Prime. Several of those parts are desktop-only or Android-only, so check your platform.
Meshnet
Meshnet lets you link your own devices (or friends' devices) over encrypted private tunnels for file sharing, remote access or LAN-style gaming. NordVPN announced in August 2025 that it would shut Meshnet down, then reversed that decision in September 2025 after user pushback. It says Meshnet stays live and supported and will be open-sourced. Good news, but if Meshnet is your main reason to buy, keep an eye on how it develops.
Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers
Specialty servers include Double VPN (your traffic passes through two VPN servers), Onion Over VPN (routes into the Tor network), obfuscated servers (help on networks that block VPNs), and P2P-optimized servers. Double VPN adds privacy but costs speed, so most people should leave it for occasional, sensitive use.
No-logs policy and audits
NordVPN's no-logs claims have been independently assessed six times. PwC Switzerland did the 2018 and 2020 reviews, and Deloitte did the later ones. The most recent was a Deloitte Lithuania engagement from November 10 to December 12, 2025, under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard, covering standard, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. These are point-in-time assessments, and the full report is only visible to logged-in customers. Still, few VPNs have a track record this long.
Other extras
Every plan includes Dark Web Monitor for your email addresses. Dedicated IP and Incogni (data-broker removal) are paid add-ons at checkout. Complete and Prime add 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage, and Prime adds US identity-theft and credit-monitoring features through a third party.
Streaming
NordVPN is widely used for streaming, and NordLynx is quick enough for HD and 4K on a decent connection. That said, streaming services actively block VPN IPs, and what works changes from month to month and from country to country. We won't promise any specific library will unlock. Two honest tips: (1) use it to reach the services you already pay for while traveling, and check each service's terms; (2) test your must-have services in the first few days so you can still use the 30-day refund if they don't work.
Pricing tiers (at the time of writing)
On October 29, 2026, NordVPN's US pricing page listed three tiers: Basic, Complete and Prime. The figures below are what that page showed on that date. Prices, bonus months and promos change often, especially in November, so check the official page before you buy. Sales tax may apply.
| Plan | 2-year plan (intro) | Monthly billing | Renews at | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.49/mo ($94.23 for the first 27 months) | $14.99/mo | $139.08/year | VPN for 10 devices, scam & phishing protection, Dark Web Monitor |
| Complete | $3.99/mo ($107.73 for the first 27 months) | $19.99/mo | $219.48/year | + next-gen antivirus features, ad/tracker blocker, password manager, 1 TB cloud storage, Dark Web Monitor Pro |
| Prime | $6.99/mo ($188.73 for the first 27 months) | $29.99/mo | $296.28/year | + US identity-theft insurance, credit monitoring and related features |
One-year plans were also listed (for example, Basic at $74.85 for the first 15 months). Note what the table shows: the per-month price is billed upfront for the whole first term, and after that the plan renews yearly at a higher price. At the time of writing, Complete cost only slightly more than Basic for the first term, which makes it the better-value tier if you'd use the password manager and extra protection. Confirm current prices on NordVPN's official pricing page.
30-day money-back guarantee
All plans bought directly from NordVPN come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. You ask support within 30 days of your first purchase. If you buy through the Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon, the refund has to go through that store instead, so buying on the website is simpler if you might want your money back.
What we like
- Fast, battery-friendly NordLynx protocol with optional post-quantum encryption
- No-logs policy independently assessed six times since 2018
- Up to 10 devices on one account, with apps for every major platform including TVs
- Scam and phishing blocking included even on Basic
- Useful specialty servers (Double VPN, obfuscated, P2P) and Meshnet
- A straightforward 30-day refund window
What we don't like
- Renewal price jumps: intro prices apply only to the first term, and renewals are much higher
- Long plans are billed upfront, so the "per month" price isn't what hits your card
- Auto-renew is on by default. Set a reminder or switch it off in your Nord Account
- Upsells everywhere: add-ons at checkout and lots of tier-gated features
- Some protection features are desktop-only or Android-only
- Post-quantum mode doesn't work with Meshnet, obfuscated servers or dedicated IPs
- Streaming access can't be guaranteed (true of every VPN)
Alternatives in brief
| VPN | Consider it if… |
|---|---|
| NordVPN | You want a fast, well-audited all-rounder with optional security extras. |
| Surfshark | You have a very large household or lots of devices and want a budget-friendly price. It's known for not capping simultaneous connections. |
| Proton VPN | You want a free tier to start with, open-source apps, and a privacy-first company based in Switzerland. |
We haven't linked these alternatives. Compare their current pricing and renewal terms on their own sites.
NordPass: the password manager add-on
A VPN protects your connection. It does nothing about reused or leaked passwords, which cause far more account takeovers. NordPass is Nord Security's password manager: autosave and autofill, a secure vault for passwords, cards and notes, and sync across devices. Its paid tiers add Password Health (flags weak, old and reused passwords), a Data Breach Scanner, password sharing and file attachments. A free tier covers the basics, a Family plan gives six separate vaults, and personal plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
At the time of writing, NordVPN's Complete and Prime plans list a cross-platform password manager as included. If you're choosing between Basic and Complete, factor that in. If you already have a VPN, NordPass can be bought on its own.
Fix your passwords too: start with NordPass's free tier, or upgrade for breach scanning and Password Health.
Check NordPass plansHow to judge the Black Friday VPN deal
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, and VPN promotions usually start earlier. At the time of writing, NordVPN's pricing page was already showing a Black Friday banner. Headline numbers are designed to look dramatic, so here's how we'd judge any VPN deal, NordVPN's included:
- Look at the total, not the per-month figure. Two-year deals are charged upfront. Check what you'll actually pay today.
- Divide by the real term. "Bonus months" change the term length (for example, 27 months instead of 24). Compare deals by total price ÷ total months.
- Check the renewal price. The discount ends after the first term. Write down the renewal figure on the pricing page and set a calendar reminder a few weeks before it.
- Compare tiers, not just discounts. When the gap between Basic and Complete is small, the higher tier (with the password manager and extra protection) can be better value. If you won't use the extras, Basic is fine.
- Ignore fake urgency. Countdown timers reset. Big VPN brands run some kind of promo most of the year, so Black Friday is a good time to buy, not the only one.
- Use the 30-day guarantee properly. Buy direct, test your must-have uses (speed, streaming, work apps) in week one, and ask for a refund if it doesn't fit.
- Skip add-ons you didn't plan for. Dedicated IP and data-removal add-ons are offered at checkout. Only take them if you know you need them.

FAQ
How much does NordVPN cost in 2026?
At the time of writing, two-year plans started from $3.49/month for Basic (billed upfront), and monthly billing started at $14.99. Renewals are higher. Check the official page for today's price.
Does NordVPN have a money-back guarantee?
Yes, 30 days on all plans bought directly from NordVPN. App store purchases are refunded through the store.
Does NordVPN keep logs?
Its no-logs policy has been independently assessed six times, most recently by Deloitte in late 2025. These are point-in-time assessments.
Does NordVPN auto-renew?
Yes, at the then-current renewal price. You can turn auto-renew off in your Nord Account and keep access until your term ends.
Is NordPass included with NordVPN?
At the time of writing, the Complete and Prime plans list a password manager as included. Basic doesn't. NordPass is also sold separately, with a free tier.
Is the NordVPN Black Friday deal worth it?
If you'll keep a VPN for the full term, often yes. Judge it by the total upfront cost, the real term length and the renewal price, not the headline per-month number.
Verdict: 4.5 / 5
NordVPN is a strong, well-audited all-rounder. It's fast on NordLynx, it covers 10 devices, it includes useful protection even on Basic, and its 30-day refund gives you a real trial. It loses points for renewal pricing and constant upsells. Our advice: buy direct during a promo, pick Complete if you'll use the password manager (otherwise Basic), and set a reminder before the renewal date.
